Sports Complex Construction

SantA Matilde COMMUNITY

The Problem

Santa Matilde is home to 330 families who survived Hurricane Mitch in October 1998. They have been settled together as a community since 2003. The children at Santa Matilde have no recreational resources and many young male adults have turned to drugs or alcohol as a social activity. Good male role models are needed to set an example for the younger children. Both boys and girls need physical education to make them healthy and strong. Dedicated sports fields, athletic equipment and uniforms are virtually nonexistent.

OUR Approach
By constructing recreational facilities, community members have the opportunity to participate in something positive.  The teens of the community will have a place to socialize without getting caught up in drugs and alcohol, a very common problem among Nicaragua’s youth.

Why
With little income to devote to community infrastructure, Amigos would like to provide the capital for improvement of physical living conditions. Our recreational programs are geared toward the youth of community.

The Plan

We want to construct a multi-purpose athletic complex at Santa Matilde to serve the surrounding community. The complex will consist of a concrete basketball/soccer court with a grandstand and field house. A grass baseball and soccer field will be installed nearby. We want to partner with the City of Chinandega to organize a competitive sports league for men, giving them an outlet for recreational activity and encouraging teamwork and civic pride.  We want to supply the teams with the proper athletic equipment. The athletic complex will also serve the Santa Matilde school for physical education classes.

Experience

We completed a similar sports complex at Villa Catalina that opened to great fanfare in July of 2007.  The entire community celebrated the inaugural soccer games, as members of the Amigos for Christ micro loan program sold snacks to the crowd. Teams from Villa Catalina and surrounding areas competed with pride and the whole experience reinforced our belief that organized athletic activity strengthens individuals and communities.
