Feeding Center Operation |

The Problem |
|
Malnutrition is an achingly constant problem in much of
Nicaragua. Families struggle to feed themselves one nutritious
meal a day. As a result, children lose focus in the classroom or
do not
attend school
at all. 2 of 3 children in the Chinandega
do not finish 6th grade. |
|
OUR Approach
|
|
Amigos for Christ works with the
Nicaraguan Ministry of Education
to build primary schools and employ qualified and motivated
teachers. After 1 year, the Ministry of Education incorporates
these schools into the national education system and assumes
financial responsibility for the school. We also start feeding
centers at these schools as an additional incentive to come to
school and at the same time offer valuable nourishment. The
attendance rate increases dramatically
when children and parents know a good meal is waiting at the end
of classes. |

|
Why |
 |
|
In
order to learn, children must be healthy. We want
to provide a school environment where
opportunity is abundant.
In such a poor country, the national budget does not
include feeding center operation which we feel is a very
important aspect to education. That is why we help in
this area. |
|
|
The Plan |
|
Amigos for Christ operates feeding centers in Santa Matilde,
Villa Catalina and Nueva Salvacion communities that serve 2
healthy meals a day and vitamins to nearly
800 children
who attend the schools. Parents volunteer to cook and serve the
food, thereby becoming an important part of the operation and
helping to ensure its success. |

 |
Experience |
|
The
community feeding centers have fulfilled their purpose by
encouraging kids to attend school. We find that the school
children are healthier, happier and more alert each year. They
look forward to eating eggs, beans, rice and tortillas and
drinking a glass of milk each day. The eggs are collected fresh
from the chicken house at Villa Catalina. Mothers of the school
kids volunteer together on behalf of their children. A sense of
pride and fairness prevails that benefits everyone.
