Scholarship Program

Secondary School, Technical School, & University

The Problem

We recognize that the future prosperity of Nicaragua depends on a diversely educated population. Every qualified student should have the choice to pursue a secondary, technical or university education.  Nicaragua students are often torn between helping their families survive and continuing their studies.  Secondary school students are faced with tuition, books and transportation costs to continue their schooling. Only 20% of students make it to graduation.

OUR Approach

Amigos for Christ has set up a scholarship program to educate both secondary/vocational school students and university students.  Since state-sponsored education ends at the 6th grade, scholarships for tuition, books, and transportation are needed to help these hard-working students.

 Why

The only way out of the vicious cycle of poverty that grips poor families in Nicaragua is education.  We hope our scholarship program plays a vital part in the education of Nicaragua’s youth, which will provide a greater opportunity for the country’s economic growth.

The Plan

We want to provide 100 secondary, technical and university scholarships in 2008. For as little as $25.00 a month, a qualified students can further their education and gain the knowledge to make a decent living and help diversify Nicaragua’s economy.

Each student is required to sign and adhere to an annual contract with Amigos for Christ. They agree to attend classes regularly and attain grades of 70 or above, to volunteer at their village primary school and to correspond with their sponsor throughout the school term.

Amigos for Christ will pay tuition costs directly to the school and provide transportation costs and school supplies directly to the student.

Experience
We have administered the scholarship program for 2 years with great success and have fine-tuned the logistics of coordinating with the students and enforcing the standards. The scholarship program has grown from 30 students to 100 students. Individual students have also benefited from the guidance and mentoring that we provide.
