|
The Problem |
|
Nicaraguans living in rural communities have
little access to books and learning resources
outside of their schools. We built a library at Villa Catalina
and are stocking it with Spanish language books for children and
young adults. Its three computers serve all 116 families
in the village. |

|
OUR Approach
|
|
Amigos for Christ works with the
Nicaraguan Ministry of Education
to build primary schools and employ qualified and motivated
teachers. After 1 year, the Ministry of Education incorporates
these schools into the national education system and assumes
financial responsibility for the school. To
compliment what children are learning in the classroom,
we have a library where children can go to read and learn on the
computer. |
|
Why |
|
To
the children of Villa Catalina, visiting the library is a
special opportunity. We want to enrich their education, and
provide as many books and materials to
keep
them excited and interested in learning. |
| |
 |
The Plan |
|
We
want to expand the number of reading materials and
upgrade the computers in the library. There are
unlimited possibilities
to provide remedial adult education, supplemental
reading programs for students and independent computer
study programs for all ages. |
|
Experience |
|
The
community has embraced the library as a learning center.
It is a popular place for mothers to bring small
children and read books. School students earn computer
time by behaving in school. By having access to a source
of books, the overall
reading
skills of primary students at the school have improved
over the course of time. |
