MOBILE MEDICAL UNIT |
|
|
|
The Problem |
 |
|
There are only
32 public hospitals in the entire country
of Nicaragua and one doctor for every 2500 people. Many
Nicaraguans in rural communities have never been treated
by a doctor and suffer with easily treatable maladies.
Parents must be healthy in order to provide for their
families. Their children must be well cared for to
survive infancy and succeed in school. Our mobile
medical van routinely visits 15 rural communities,
giving basic medical care and preventative health
information. |
|
OUR Approach |
|
Amigos for Christ will continue to provide family
practice services in the 15 communities
(over 6000 people)
where we currently serve. Our Doctor and Pharmacist see
an average of 50 patients a day. |

|
Why |
|
Unfortunately,
there are not enough clinics, surgeons, doctors, nurses and
medicines
in rural Nicaragua. We must invest in changing this, but at the
same time, work in partnership with Nicaraguan Health Ministry
to staff these clinics. As surgeons, we can provide an
otherwise not available service, and at the same time, train our
Nicaraguan counterparts. |

|
The Plan |
|
We will continue to visit 15 communities each month, with the goal of increasing
to 16. We employ a doctor and a pharmacist/driver to
keep the mobile medical unit operating. Since health
care is provided at no cost, we must also supply the
medicine, vehicle maintenance, gas and insurance. Our
medical team will continue to offer family practice
clinics and screen patients for the surgical brigades
that serve at St. Martin de Porres Hospital in
Chinandega. |
|
|
Experience |
|
Nearly
4,000 people are positively affected
by the mobile unit. The medical van can reach remote villages
like El Capulin, San Francisco, Miguel Cristiano and Nueva
Salvacion. The people in these villages live in the most
desperate circumstances. We have been able to alleviate some of
their suffering with basic medications and to schedule medical
procedures for conditions such as Ponsetti clubfoot. |
