HOW YOU CAN HELP

ECOTOURISM

The OPPORTUNITY
Nicaragua has a diverse array of outdoor recreation opportunities. Of key interest to us is offering Nicaraguans a sustainable and eco-friendly employment opportunity by entering the emerging market of High Adventure Missions.

Our approach

We have a short term goal of research and analysis this summer to determine the viability of this venture. By completing a cost/benefit analysis of several options we will be able to determine whether or not to pursue a long term goal of establishing two week or longer mission trips. These trips would be comprised of half community development and half high adventure excursions.

 Why

We would like to create a sustainable and eco-friendly business venture. The missions world is changing. Historically, missionaries have gone into a foreign land and offered support, but they tended to perpetuate a system in which the people they were helping relied solely on the support of the missionaries. We hope that by creating this micro-enterprise we can: hire Nicaraguans, help boost the local economy, and provide an exciting and challenging adventure to our volunteers.

THE PLAN

James Goddard is an Eco-tourism major at the University of Georgia. He has been involved with Amigos for many years. He is planning to travel to Nicaragua in May 2008 to begin laying the foundation for our High Adventure Missions. He will begin researching viable options for the adventure portion of our mission trips. By September 2008, James will produce a feasibility study which will enable us to determine whether to proceed with this business opportunity. Our goal in this venture is to provide an opportunity to generate income for the local economy and provide a diverse mission trip experience.
