HOW YOU CAN HELP

PAY IT FORWARD

The Problem

Nicaragua is the poorest country in Latin America. Although its volcanic soil is among the richest on earth, its people struggle to earn more than $1 a day. 45% of its children suffer from nutritional deficiencies. Family gardens are rare and few can afford livestock. Consequently, they cannot take full advantage of their natural resources.

OUR Approach

We train families to use the animals as nourishment and a reliable source of income. As these families raise the animals, they will “pay it forward” by giving some of the offspring to their struggling neighbors.

 Why

The Pay it Forward animals provide a new source of income and nutrition for poor families.  Not only is this an opportunity to improve their standard of living, but it also improves the community’s economy when families pass on the offspring to help a neighbor.

The Plan

We have purchased 8 acres of farmland near Chinandega and populated it with chickens, pigs, and cows purchased by donors through our “Pay it Forward” program. We are training the recipient families in animal husbandry techniques.  Once the animals are old enough to reproduce, the families will use them for food and as a source of income. They will pay their gift forward by giving some of the offspring to another deserving family in need.

Experience

Our pilot program is already paying off for the first recipients. Cows given to the families at El Capulin are producing milk and the excess is sold for a profit of 40 cents a day.  Pigs at Villa Catalina are already giving birth, thus providing their owners an alternate means of income. The families are joyful and filled with hope for their future.
