Water Distribution System |
 |
The Problem |
|
Once a well is drilled, it is often a challenge
to distribute water consistently where it is
needed for drinking, bathing and irrigation.
Often a community has had a well drilled in the
past, but cannot take full benefit of it,
because it is so far from homes and fields.
Water distribution systems are needed to
maximize the use of wells and increase
agricultural productivity. |

|
OUR Approach |
|
Amigos for Christ is working in the rural community of
Las Palmaritas. We are designing a water system to
serve the families that live there. This community has
suffered for years, walking miles to a clean water
source. |
|
|
|
 |
|
Why |
|
This
community has no other option for clean water. We want Las
Palmaritas to be a prosperous community, and where there is
abundant water, there is health and productivity. |
|
|
|
The Plan |
|
We want to complete
the water distribution system at Las Palmaritas, a poor
community east of Chinandega. The people there have
houses provided by Care International, but no gainful
employment. We recently drilled their well, but want to
also provide them with a pump, water tower and piping
system. |

Experience |
|
In Villa Catalina, the water system affords each of its
116 families a detached shower, a spigot and the
capability of irrigating nearby fields during the
six-month dry season each year. Personal hygiene and
general health has improved. Every home can have a
garden to grow fruits and vegetables and feed livestock.
In community fields, business cooperatives allow
families to grow crops in quantity to sell at the
market. Families learn to work toward their common good.
We see the same successes possible at Las Cocinas and
Las Palmaritas. |
