All
proceeds of the Amigos for Christ Fiesta & Golf Classic
will be used to create opportunities for desperately poor
families in Nicaragua. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch ravaged
the northwest area, leaving thousands dead and millions
homeless. It was the worst hurricane the western hempisphere
has seen in 200 years. Since then, Amigos for Christ has
helped surviving families rebuild their lives through education,
clean water, medical services, home construction, feeding
programs, and business oportunities. |

Benefitting
the Poor... |
|
Nicaragua
is the poorest Spanish speaking country in the world. Decades
of civil war and corruption have taken an incredible toll
on the way of life. These pre-existing social and economic
problems were intensified when Hurricane Mitch roared through
the country in Ocotober 1998. In the Chinandega area, entire
villages disappeared under volcanic mudslides. Since then,
Amigos for Christ has assisted thousands of survivors through... |

Less than half of all Nicaraguan
children have access to an education. To help the next generation
overcome poverty, Amigos for Christ operates schools in rural
communities. We also set up a scholarship program for secondary,
vocational, and university students.

The Nicaraguan government did little to help
the survivors of Hurricane Mitch, and hundreds of families were
relocated to the miserable community of El Limonal, which was
surrounded by the city garbage dump, a contaminated river, and
a slaughterhouse. To help these families, Amigos for Christ
purchased 52 acres or beautiful farmland and began the project
of Villa Catalina. Families are living in temporary tents while
they work together to build 120 new homes.

Thousands of Nicaraguans use contaminated rivers
and wells for drinking water, causing infections and sometimes,
fatal diseases. To date, Amigos for Christ has drilled over
50 wells for rural communities and struggling orphanages. In
addition to clean drinking water, the wells are also used for
crop irrigation. The results have been bountiful harvests of
fruits and vegetables.

Several communities are struggling
to get by in rural areas of Nicaragua. Without proper nutrition,
children cannot succeed in school, reinforcing the continuous
cycle of poverty. To help these children, Amigos for Christ
operates feeding centers in rural communities. Here, children
who regularly attend school can recieve 2 healthy meals a day.
These feeding centers have dramatically increased school attendance.

Unemployment and underemployment
are widespread, especially in the Chinandega area. Most adults
do not have the skills necessary for a stable job, causing many
families to scavenge for what they need. Amigos for Christ has
formed business cooperatives to teach community members a trade,
while helping them earn a steady income. At Villa Catalina, the
cooperative is broken into 4 areas - organic farming, compost
production, pig and chicken farming, and a thrift store. |

Healthcare services in Nicaragua are primarily
located in urban areas, leaving rural communities dangerously
underserved. Amigos for Christ operates a mobile medical unit
that routinely visits 12 villages in northwest Nicaragua. We also
built and operate a hospital where American doctors and nurses
volunteer their time to perform surgery for the poor |
